Gradebook

What is Gradebook?

The Gradebook posts all student grades associated with tests and assignments. Assessments that are not available to students do not appear in the Gradebook. Instructors may also add grades to the Gradebook for work that has been done outside the Blackboard. For example, if students manually hand in a project, the instructor may add the item and all of the grades for the project to the Gradbook. The Gradebook feature allows instructors to perform many different functions related to grading.

How to Manage Gradebook?

  1. Click on Control Panel link on the left side of the course site.
  2. Click on Gradbook under Assessment section to open the View Spreadsheet page.
  3. Select a function from action bar at the top of this page.
  4. Follow the instructions specific function (below).

Function Buttons

Add Item
  1. Fill in Item Name field.
  2. Select from the Category pull down list.
  3. Type in a Description of item.
  4. Set the date.
  5. Fill in the Points Possible.
  6. Specify an option from the Display As pull down list.
  7. Select Options by clicking desired radio box(s).
  8. Click the Submit button at the bottom of this page.
Manage Item
  • Click on the Modify button next to the item to change.
  • Change the desired information.
  • Click the Submit button.
  • If desired, change the order of items by clicking on the drop-down number menus in front of each item.
  • Click the OK button.
Gradebook Settings
  • Select desired option (see below).
  • Click the OK button.
Spreadsheet Settings
    • Click desired options.
    • Click the Submit button at the bottom of this page.

Manage Gradebook Categories (categories are how items are sorted in the gradebook)

  • Click Add Category button.
  • Fill in Title field.
  • Fill in Description field.
  • Click the Submit button.

Manage Display Options (This feature lets you determine what number percentage is assigned to letter grades.)

  • Click the Modify button next to the Letter option.
  • Adjust the numbers and letters in offered fields as desired.
  • Click the Submit button.
Weight Grades
  • Click desired Weight radio button.
  • Fill in number percentage you assign to each item.
  • Click the Submit button.

Download Grades

  • Read instructions on the Download Gradebook page.
  • Click the Download button.
  • Click the OK button from the File Download window.
  • Select location to download to.
  • Click the Save button.
  • Click the Submit button.

Note: The Gradebook .csv downloaded file is Excel compatible file, and can be opened from within Excel (File>open).

Upload Grades

  • Click the Browse button.
  • Select the desired file on your computer.
  • Click the Open button.
  • Click the Submit button.
  • Choose desired options.
  • Click the Submit button.
  • Select all students affected by the upload.
  • Click the Submit button.
  • Click the OK button.

 

Questions about Gradebook

  • Can I enter all the grades for an item at one time?

 

Yes, click on the name of the item at the top of the column and you will see a list of all the students and a grade field. Use your tab key to move between fields. Remember to Submit the grades before leaving this screen.

  • How can I sort my items by Titles?

 

The Sort Items by pull down list allows you to sort Items by Category, Date Added, Positions, and Titles.

  • Why would I want to use the Filter Items by Category pull down list?

 

The Filter Items by Category pull down list allows you to filter items by specific Items or view all Items at the same time.

  • What happens if I click on any of the underlined names?

 

By clicking the underlined names you will be able to access a list of options for each category. The student’s name provides such information as User Information, User Grade List, and User Details. Clicking the assignments you will be offered options such as Item Grade List, Item Information, Item Detail, Item Download, and Item File Clean Up.
