INTRODUCTION

The human brain...we all have one. It is what is allowing us to read these words. It regulated our sleep last night, enabled us to brush our teeth and dress ourselves this morning and made it possible for us to plan our day.

Yet, what do we really know about our own brain? How does it work? What role does our brain play in our emotions, our problem-solving, our interactions with the outside world? Where are our memories stored? Why can we remember some things so easily and forget other things so quickly? What causes us to feel depressed? How is our brain affected by laughter? What happens when we are trying to learn something?

Knowing how the brain works might really help us be better teachers. But, where do we start. This is a complex undertaking!

Probably the best place to begin is to become familiar with some important structures of the brain. In this module, you will learn:

        • the location and general functions of the BRAIN LOBES (frontal, occipital, parietal, temporal)
        • the location and general function of brain parts within the LIMBIC SYSTEM (amygdala, hippocampus, etc.
        • the structure of a NEURON (nerve) and how one neuron communicates with another (you'll even get to build one!),and
        • about some of the important chemicals in your brain called NEUROTRANSMITTERS.

The module will help you understand the basics of the brain. Equipped with this information, you will be able to extend your knowledge of the brain through courses, books, articles, and your own personal experiences. Applying what you learn will make you an increasingly more effective educator.

This is the beginning of an exciting journey for you.Have a wonderful trip!
