Dr. Harsimran Baweja
Harsimran Baweja PT PhD, is a physical therapist by trade, a neurophysiologist by training, and a mad scientist by choice. The main effect of this unusual combination is pushing the boundaries of norms for academic curiosity. Dr. Baweja is an Associate Professor of Physical Therapy at San Diego State University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. He directs the Neuromechanics and Neuroplasticity Laboratory on the SDSU campus. It is a state of the art facility that uses immersive technology (Virtual, augmented and mixed reality, and 360 videos) to simulate environments in which he and his team test human performance (e.g. driving and walking) and measure neurophysiological responses from the brain, muscles and heart along with biomechanics. He is a core investigator in multiple institutional and international centers for research excellence such as the SDSU Smart Health Institute, SDSU Center for Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience and UCSD National Parkinson’s Disease Center for Movement Disorders.
Dr. Baweja is the SDSU Instructional Technology Services Faculty Fellow for Immersive Learning. In this capacity, he works with a team of professors and instructional technology specialists on campus to integrate immersive technology into the curriculum and to help SDSU faculty with using and implementing this technology in their courses and programs. Since AY 2018, in collaboration with the CSU Chancellor’s Office – Academic Technology Services, he has facilitated a California State University Systemwide endeavor (Common Interest Group) on Immersive learning that meets once a month. This initiative aims to support a community of faculty, technologists and student enthusiasts in order to help provide students with experiences and activities beyond the current scope of the physical classroom. Through immersive exploration, discovery, context, focus, and access to leading-edge technologies, Faculty and their students connect learning objectives to real-world problems. With an emphasis on eliminating achievement gaps, opportunities are presented to enhance and expand the academic repertoire of CSU students in all spheres – communication, mathematics, arts, technology and science (GI 2025).
