Virtual Instruction Primer (VIP) Workshops

During these workshop, ITS Staff and Faculty Fellows will share tools, methods, and effective practices for teaching virtually. They will also cover integrating research-based pedagogy and technology to assess student performance. This workshop will provide information to move elements of your face-to-face course into a virtual environment by integrating research-based pedagogy and technology to teach and assess student performance. VIP: Zoom – Tips, Tricks, and Best Practices

In this Zoom session, Rebecca will share tips, tricks, and best practices for how to use Zoom during live sessions with students and using Zoom to increase presence and add a ‘personal touch’ to fully online/asynchronous courses. Depending on what you’d like to discuss, Rebecca can cover the basics (zoom settings and basic A/V troubleshooting, recording sessions to the cloud or locally, screen sharing, whiteboard, managing participants audio/video), or advanced skills (using breakout groups and Google docs for small group discussions and sharing out, screen sharing from peripherals, etc.).

The Library has high quality ebooks and electronic resources that faculty can use in their courses, and students can access for free. This session is of particular relevance to faculty who have physical course reserves that students no longer can access and now need to select alternate electronic content. Learn what to look for when selecting Library ebooks for use in your course, get up to date on complimentary access to commercial publisher electronic textbooks, and learn how to find relevant and free Open Educational Resources. The Library also provides Streaming Media – movies, documentaries, and music. Find out how to discover streaming media, and how to request specific titles if the library doesn’t already have what you need.

VIP: Turnitin For Feedback and Assessment

Turnitin is integrated within Canvas and enables faculty to provide feedback via written and/or voice comments, “quickmarks” placed on drafts, and grading rubrics. When a paper is graded in Turnitin, the score appears automatically in the Canvas grade book. Also available through Turnitin is a peer review tool, as well as a plagiarism detector.

In this Zoom session, Jon Rizzo will discuss and demonstrate methods for assessing your students virtually via Canvas. The session will focus on Assignments, Tests/Pools, and other formative and summative assessment tools in Canvas. Attending faculty members will also receive recommendations on best practices and pedagogical considerations when assessing students virtually.

Moving a course to the virtual environment is one thing. Doing it in a week or two is another thing. Running a large-enrollment online course is a whole other kind of beast. In this Zoom session, Mark Laumakis, Lecturer in the Department of Psychology and ITS Faculty in Residence, will share some tips, tricks, and best practices, based on his 15+ years of teaching up to 500 students in his hybrid Introductory Psychology course, as well as in his large-enrollment fully online Summer Session course. Topics to be covered include communicating with students, minimizing the email load, managing grades, and supporting your students in challenging times.

VIP: Improve the Quality of Your Online Instruction

Moving to a virtual teaching modality can be challenging and many faculty worry about maintaining the quality of their course during this transition. In this session, you will learn strategies to enhance the design and delivery of your virtual instruction to improve the student learning experience and to more closely resemble that of a face-to-face class. This session will provide a crash-course on the Quality Online Learning and Teaching rubric, an evaluative instrument that can be used to help guide online instruction, to better prepare faculty for the challenges of conducting classes virtually.
